I'm not sure this is related, but I wouldn't be surprised.
When I was around 10 years old (1965), I attended Camp St. Joseph in Peekskill, NY. It was a boys' camp, and I believe there was a Camp St. Frances for girls on the other side of a lake. I imagine that the same Order of nuns ran the camp and the orphanage.
I was a reasonably well-behaved child, but I remember how camp terrified me. Children were regularly whipped for the smallest infractions, and yelling was constant. It was the worst two weeks of my childhood.
My parents contemplated suing the camp after I filled them in on the details, but like many good Catholics, they decided that it would be sinful to sue a Catholic order.
I hope this helps.
