My apologies for my rushed entry earlier.
here is the comment I was referring to from Old Timer,"as far as fostering a diverse community, that will only happen if whites are a majority. Because if they are not, would I, as a white potential homebuyer, buy in Fort Lee and be a minority in the town?".
Another voice: I agree with you that this is not a true statement. And I agree with your reasoning that people will gravitate towards those they are similar to and comfortable with. My problem was with the statement that in order to have diversity, whites need to be the majority. I don't see how whites being a majority is a prerequisite to diversity. To that end, I don't see how having any group in a majority is necessary for diversity.
The relevance of my reference to "3/5" was that this statement and mentality was probably accepted during the pre-civil war era due to ignorance. I correlate that same type of ignorance to those that make statements defining diversity as majority white. My making that statement was more of a reflex response to what I read as an ignorant view. That is why I asked Old Timer to re-read his statement to understand why that can be taken in such a negative light. Instead of tolerating diversity (forget embracing it, since that apparently won't happen), some will choose to circle the wagons, warns other of the invading foreigners and eventually move out of town.
In regards to whites being excluded from the diversity mix in Fort Lee, I don't think whites are being "excluded" from Fort Lee. They are the ones choosing to either move out or not live there.
