Alas, Councilman Tom Meyers' valiant fight to have the Barrymore house purchased by the town for preservation has come to naught. The house will be demolished, and still more brick-and-concrete monoliths will be built in its place.
Fort Lee has not done what it ought to in making people aware of its importance to the film industry. This is a shame. In the early years of the industry, Fort Lee, along with the entire "Gold Coast" of NJ, was the center of the film industry, until the coal shortage of 1917 forced the studios westward.
If you drive West on Main Street past Anderson Ave., you will see a decrepit yellow building on your left. That used to be a studio, and nothing is there to indicate it as such.
The best source of info on the early film industry is the Fort Lee Public library. They have many clippings, as well as a video about the early years of the film industry, and a number of noncirculating books about the studios in NJ.
If you see a silent Western, it was probably filmed in Fort Lee, in the Coytesville section. If you see a "Perils of Pauline" short, it was filmed on the cliffs of the Palisades.
I lived in Fort Lee for eight years, and it wasn't until I was doing research for a fiction project that I became aware of the town's history.
