You have a good memory. There was a liquor store on the corner of Palisade Ave. & Main St., next to Krieger's which was my Dads favorite bar. My husband even said that the liquor store was the A & P's. Mind you, he has only lived in Fort Lee from 1961, when we got married. He drove my Dad to Krieger's quite often. You described the position of the clock on the First National Bank to a tee. I was way off track.
I knew that was Minieri's butcher shop. Al & Freddy but I didn't think you were familiar with their name. That's why I didn't mention it.Al was a loyal fireman to Firehouse #1 right across the street from thei store. My mom use to say he would be waiting on a custimer and when that whistle blew, Al went flying out the door to the firehouse.
You mentioned Eddies Auto Body Shop. My husband & I knew where that was. We lived right there on the end of Edwin Ave. in the 60's.
I forgot to mention (which you probably knew already) that the Minieri's moved up to west Fort Lee on Main St. right before where the fire house is now. And also, do you remember Chris' grocery store on the corner of John & Main Sts. And also DeMatteo's butcher across from Chris' and also Laujon's Appliance store.
Well that's enough rambling for now.
Later,
Marilyn
If you get two messages from me on the same subject I might have clicked on the wrong key. Not sure.
