Re: [ Schools/Education ] Fort Lee High School

I graduated from FLHS in 1996 and took Ms. DeTieri's (DiTieri?) Art V class in my senior year. I have an old picture of my art class visiting the Javits Center with Ms. DiTieri but don't have a scanned version. When I get hold of a scanner, I'll try to post a link. It's from 10 years ago, but I doubt she has changed much since she takes such good care of herself.
She really is an amazing woman inside and out. I wanted to take an art class in my senior year and was in line to take Art II, but it didn't fit into my curriculum schedule. So I thought about taking the course as an independent study during the Art V time slot, but Ms. DiTieri said why don't you just take Art V, you seem like you'd be good at art while my guidance counselor's jaw dropped (she replied, what, skip Art II-IV, to which Ms. DiTieri said, why not). I missed a lot of days in school (basically playing hooky) in my senior year, and she was the only educator there who actually said to me, is everything all right, and that I can come to her if I wanted someone to talk to. Other teachers didn't bother since I received good grades.
Oh, and I had no idea she was in her 60's when I took her class. I thought she was fortysomething and one day her former student came to visit and he was fortysomething. Haha, my classmates and I were saying that he looked older than Ms. DiTieri. I wish I can look like her when I am her age.
My Art V class consisted of all girls, and all of them were art school-bound (makes sense since it was Art V) except for me. So we had some interesting conversations with Ms. DiTieri (like about her marriage to a man twice her age when she was in her early 20's and how the age difference wasn't so bad, etc). That certainly was one of the more enjoyable classes at FLHS for me as I didn't have to worry about building a good portfolio like my classmates.
