Actually you have your history a little twisty if you don't mind me saying - the first studio built in Fort Lee and the oldest standing studio building in the nation today (according to film historian Rutgers University Professor Richard Koszarski) is the Champion Studio on Fifth St. in Coytesville - it was the home to Universal when Universal founder Carl Laemmle formed the studio - also Universal dates their first film to "Hiawatha" shot in Coytesville - Universal later built their large studio on Main Street in West Fort Lee - we are actually placing a new historic marker at the West Fort Lee site in the next few weeks in addition to one in Coytesville Park -these follow the historic markers we previously placed on Lemoine Avenue at the site of Alice Guy Blache's Solax Studio, and Constitution Park (4 markers for the studios such as Fox that existed at that spot). The idea is to do regular historic jitney tours and walking tours - we are working on a historic map to be used for walking tours.
All parts of Fort Lee are important and historic with their own unique history -however - few family members from the early days still exist or visit so the Coytes (who date back to the pre civil war era in the area) are important guests and are contributors to the preservation of Fort Lee histroy. As for the American Revolution - we promote that aspect of our history through an event that occurs each year on the saturday in November closest to the actual Nov. 20 retreat date- the Brigade of the American Revolution reenacts the Retreat up Main Street - we end with a ceremony in Monument Park (which we recently restored and this restoration included the first restoration of the monument itself since it was placed in the park in 1908). In 2005 we were fortunate to have historian Thomas Fleming speak during the ceremony and we hope to bring him back this coming November. The Borough of Fort Lee, Fort Lee Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs, The Fort Lee Historical Society and the Palisade Interstate Park/Fort Lee Historic Park worked together to make this an annual tradition over the past decade.
Our Fort Lee Museum at 1588 Palisade Avenue has four major exhibit each year - the current exhibit opening this Saturday at 7pm (June 17) is "New Deal for the Palisades" and is curated by Palisade Interstate Park Historical Interpreter Eric Nelsen. This exhibit will feature archival photos and artifacts highlighting the impact President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal Agencies (CCC / WPA) had on the Palisades Interstate Park in the Fort Lee area. The next exihibit in September will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the opening of the George Washington Bridge.
We are always looking for volunteers for the Fort Lee Historical Society so if interested come to the museum any weekend or this saturday evening to fill out an application.
