I was referring to the High School rating earlier this month. The most recent rating was for elementary and middle schools, where we did do well against the neighboring towns. However, keep in mind that you can't compare Fort Lee to the surrounding towns. You must compare them against the other FG rated towns. Cliffside and Ridgefield and I believe Leonia are lower rated socioeconomic status towns.
It goes beyond the school issue. Diversity is great. But if the current trends continue, Koreans will make up an ever larger percentage of the town's population (currently over 40% in schools, something like 30-35% overall) and we won't have diversity anymore than they do in Pal Park. When non-Asians look for a town to buy a house and are willing to pay what it costs to buy in Fort Lee, they will compare it to other towns in that price range. Many will make the decision to buy in a town that is not as heavily Asian. That becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the trend grows. Just take a look at the number of Asian real estate agents in town now. I'm quite sure that the vast majority (probably close to 100%) of their clientele is Asian.
This is a sensitive issue and I certainly don't want to come off as a racist. Towns and times change, and we can't and shouldn't unfairly discriminate. But the truth is that at least for a generation or so, Koreans stick to themselves and create an aura of separation in the towns they live in because of language and cultural differences. It would be the same with any other immigrant group, be they Greeks, Russians, or Orthodox Jews(regarding the latter, see what is going on in Tenafly with the eruv controversy). People want a stable, friendly town where there is a sense of unity and belonging. When a town becomes a magnet for any small ethnic group, the potential for that group to disrupt the cohesiveness of the town is real.
I have no answers, but I think the issue is real.
