Dear Interested Citizen:
Why is it that when someone tries to defend the integrity of a minority community, that person is accused of having a chip on their shoulder?
Sure, my tone may have been a bit angry and I apologize for offending anyone but I do feel very strongly about this topic.I am friends with many Asian Americans and have witnessed countless acts of racism made against them -- ranging from the subtle (Mike's "concern" for shifting demographics) to the not-so-subtle (grade school kids taunting my adult friends at the mall, on the street with slanted eye gestures and "ching-chong, ching chong" remarks). My frustration is a result of seeing the prejudice many Asian Americans experience today.
As far as Councilman Meyers "getting it" ...I just appreciated the fact that he had positive things to say about the Korean-American community and diversity in general, while dispelling stereotypical myths that Koreans don't participate in sports, community activities or politics. I have nothing against the other councilmembers. I was merely responding to Councilman Meyers' posts.
I don't need to lighten up. I feel fine. I'm glad Mike likes rice. So do I. Maybe we can meet up for some bib-bim-bap (popular Korean rice dish) and a beer.
Sorry for wearing my anger on my sleeve. Next time I'll hide my agenda behind wordy diatribes like Mike does. If you want an honest discussion of a community's issues, I don't see how my views can't be taken as seriously as Mike's.
