That was extremely unfortunate - that was the Rupp House that dated back to the 1860s. The Fort Lee Historical Society, of which I am a member, attempted to save the house - we tried to convince people that a restaurant could be placed in the house and the lawn accessed for an outdoor dining area much like Cafe Italiano on 9w in Englewood Cliffs.
We need to convince the zoning boards and other Borough officials of the importance of saving what is left in Fort Lee re older houses - and despite this loss there are other older houses still standing with history attached that we must save. I encourage you to come to the monthly meetings of the Fort Lee Historical Society which are held the second tuesday of each month at 7pm at the Fort Lee Museum at 1588 Palisade Avenue. The museum is housed in a stone building erected in 1922 and this building was saved from demolition so it is possible. The next meeting of the Historical Society is next tuesday, September 12.
