February is Black History Month, and the Fort Lee Film Commission (www.fortleefilm.org) honors Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951), a pioneer director of black film. Micheaux shot many films in Fort Lee’s Metropolitan Studios, including "The Exile" (1931), his first “talkie” and the first African-American sound movie, as well as his last film, "The Betrayal" (1948).
On Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at 7:00 p.m., the FLFC will present a screening of "The Exile" at the Fort Lee Public Library meeting room, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Jim Beckerman, entertainment reporter for the Record. On hand will be Micheaux biographer Pearl Bowser of the African Diaspora, as well as filmmaker Grant Harper Reid, whose grandfather, Leonard Harper, was a featured player in "The Exile". The Commission will present the Library with a framed enlarged photo of Micheaux directing in Fort Lee as part of the night’s events.
Also, on Monday, February 25, 2002 at 8:00 p.m., the FLFC will present a program on film in Fort Lee at the Horizon House, with Commission member Professor Richard Koszarski as the featured speaker.
