Dennis:
Yes we are if you mean in physical structures the look of Main Street businesses - we are in the process of creating an architectual review committee or ordinance that would create a look on Main Street buildings that plays off our streetscape. We also would seek flexibility to encourage book stores, restaurants and a three screen independent film theater (like film forum in nyc) to locate on Main Street.
The key thing is elected officials cannot do it alone - this forum is excellent but you and others need to get involved - come to Mayor & Council jmeetings and serve on volunteer committees in town. If you don't like what is going on then offer to sit on the Board of Adjustment or Planning Board. This is how you effect change and benefit the community. You can fight city hall in Fort Lee. Together we can achieve change.
The ordinance amendment I sponsored a year and a half ago has led to new house construction that does away with the large box look. These new houses now have roofs and angles and look more traditional. Take a look around town - Hammett Avenue towards Englewood Cliffs, Abbott Blvd, Fifth Street, Anderson Ave...etc.
