Having ridden the 156 for years, I can tell you that meeting new people on the bus is not a high percentage game. Maybe you could suggest that people play musical chairs between stops. That'll increase your odds greatly.
Have you tried the Whole Foods store in Edgewater? Lots of upscale folks there just waiting to chat up a stranger. Stand near the lobster tank and kiss the glass; you're bound to make a "splash".
